Opening Series Japan 2019

Major League Baseball officially kicked off its 2019 regular season with a trip across the momentous trip across the Pacific Ocean. The sport turned its eyes to Tokyo as the city hosted this year's Opening Series. The two-game set between the A's and Mariners was the perfect preview of the upcoming campaign, featuring adrenaline-pumping bat flips, monstrous home runs and a local flair unique to the baseball-crazed capital of Japan. Seattle opened up the season with back-to-back close victories, including a 12-inning triumph in the series finale. Of course, wins weren't the only thing to celebrate for Mariners fans that week; the team honored the historic career of Ichiro, the legendary hitter who spent 13-plus of his nearly two decades in the Majors with Seattle. The 2001 Rookie of the Year, MVP and member of the 3,000-hit club was taken out of the game in the eighth inning of the second game to an emotional ovation from his hometown crowd. He retired at the contest's conclusion, the perfect send off for perhaps the game's most influential and recognizable Japanese player.
