If Steven Matz wasn't a professional baseball player, he would have pursued his dream to become a firefighter. Steven values first responders. He considers them our true heroes and he continues to honor their dedication through the Tru32 initiative, a program that he started in 2015.
Steven honors 32 heroes of the New York Police Department, Fire Department of New York and Military service members at various events at Citi Field during the season. The groups watch batting practice, meet and take photos with Steven and get to enjoy tickets to that night's home game.
In 2019, Matz invited members of the 102 Precinct in Queens to Citi Field to honor the late NYPD Detective Brian Simonsen, who died in the line of duty. Family members and fellow officers were on hand to receive a team signed jersey to commemorate their fallen hero.
